Writing & editing

From daily news to long-form features, I write with clarity, speed and accuracy. I have written across B2B media, environmental journalism, plant-based and sustainability sectors, education and lifestyle. I copyedit and proofread to a high standard across fiction, non-fiction, web content, and e-books.

Editorial leadership

I have built editorial teams from scratch, designed workflow systems, managed commissioning schedules and maintained house style across high-volume publications.

Manuscript assessment & children’s editorial

With a background in teaching literacy to children across four countries and professional experience copyediting children’s stories, I offer manuscript reading and assessment for children’s fiction and picture books. I bring both an editorial eye and a genuine understanding of what works for young readers.

About

I’m Emma Clarkson — a writer and editor with over a decade of published work and six years leading the editorial team at a global B2B publication reaching subscribers in 190+ countries. I was headhunted to build the English-language platform from scratch, and over that time I oversaw more than 13,000 articles with around 6,000 written by myself; developed and led an international team of writers; and grew the publication’s LinkedIn audience to almost 60K followers.

Before my editorial career I spent nearly a decade teaching English and literacy to children and adults across Costa Rica, South Korea, the Cayman Islands and Spain. I am currently writing picture books of my own, with three in development.

I am based in South Wales and open to relocation. I am available for editorial roles, freelance writing and editing commissions, copy editing, proofreading and ghostwriting.

Work

I am currently contributing to Protein Production Technology International and Microdose for Peace, and am at work on my own creative writing, including three picture books in development.

From 2018 to 2024 I served as Managing Editor at one of the leading global publications in the plant-based and alternative protein space. I was made redundant in December 2024 when the publication lost funding — a chapter I’m proud of and ready to build on.

MFP is a platform dedicated to the subject of the benefits of microdosing psilocybin. Through writing and researching fungi and other medicines as well as openly discussing mental health, my mission is one of destigmatising both areas: every human deserves the opportunity to be well, and to not be ashamed of the ways that their mind works.

A digital publication devoted to the dynamic alternative proteins space, containing deep-dive articles, interviews, case studies, scientific research, innovation insights, and product announcements that showcase the next-generation of highly sustainable processes, technologies and production solutions in plant-based, fermentation-enabled, cultivated, and molecular farmed proteins.

Vegconomist Magazine and Cultivated X


Vegconomist is a global digital news platform in the plant- and cell-based business news niche, with an average monthly audience of just under a quarter of a million b2b business readers in 190+ countries and 58K LinkedIn subscribers. All of which I built from scratch. Cultivated X is a sister platform that was launched in 2024, focused on global developments in cellular agriculture and non land-based proteins such as those produced through precision fermentation and biomass fermentation.

Vegconomist Magazine – Managing Editor


  • Hiring, training, managing and nurturing a small team of freelancers to produce daily news content in a house style and brand voice that I curated.
  • Running the newsdesk: a fast-paced job that means staying on top of relevant news around the world and responding to developments at all times.
  • Social media: management and posting, with a focus on LinkedIn due to our predominantly business readership. This means being aware of how the platform and its algorithm operates. Being constantly aware of what articles the team is writing at any one point in order to plan ahead for the next window, being aware of timezones and posting accordingly.
  • Workflow: I created a workflow system and using this dynamic system I allocated work to the most appropriate writer, dependent on timezone, skills and knowledge of the topic.
  • Content proofreading, copy editing, and publishing. At our peak, I was publishing 50 articles per week.
  • Content creation: writing informative and accurate news articles that contain useful context with an emphasis on a snappy business tone for our busy readers to quickly digest. They need to know the facts concisely and the news must be published rapidly when a story breaks then immediately shared on socials.
  • Maintaining relationships with those who are making and delivering the news: this could be PR firms, NGOs, businesses from startups to large multinationals, food producers, charities, manufacturers, influencers, or CEOs.
